New Delhi, September 3: Belgium’s Prime Minister Bart De Wever is currently visiting India with his delegation. On Thursday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with De Wever at Hyderabad House. During this meeting, PM Modi congratulated his Belgian counterpart on the successful hosting of the Hockey World Cup 2026.
PM Modi stated, “Last month, Belgium and the Netherlands jointly organized the Hockey World Cup. I extend my heartfelt congratulations for this grand event. I also commend the hard work and performance of our players.”
The FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 was co-hosted by Belgium and the Netherlands, featuring both men’s and women’s tournaments. The event took place from August 15 to August 30.
Germany claimed the men’s title by defeating Spain 1-0, while Argentina won the women’s title after a penalty shootout, beating the Netherlands 3-1 following a 1-1 draw.
Both the Indian men’s and women’s teams participated in the Hockey World Cup but failed to reach the semifinals. The men’s team, led by captain Harmanpreet Singh, was eliminated in the second round, finishing in eighth place. This disappointing performance has extended India’s wait for a World Cup medal since 1975. However, captain Harmanpreet impressed with his performance, scoring 8 goals and tying for second place with South Africa’s Mustafa Cassiem.
The Indian women’s hockey team secured fifth place in the 2026 World Cup, defeating Germany 3-1 to achieve this position.
