New Delhi, July 30: Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised Indian para-athletes Dilip Mahadu Gavit and Mohammad Basil Morsingnakathe for their historic gold and silver medal wins in the men’s T47 100 meters event at the Commonwealth Games 2026. He also commended long jumper Murali Shreeshankar, who secured a silver medal for the second consecutive time at the Commonwealth Games.
Gavit clinched the gold medal with a record time of 10.71 seconds, while Basil achieved a silver medal with his season-best performance of 10.83 seconds. This remarkable achievement marked a memorable 1-2 finish for India at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games 2026.
In a post on the social media platform X, PM Modi lauded Gavit’s performance, stating, “Congratulations to Dilip Mahadu Gavit for winning the gold medal in the men’s T47 100 meters with an excellent timing, setting a new games record and achieving his season best. His speed, determination, and dedication have brought honor to our country. Best wishes for his future endeavors.”
He also praised silver medalist Mohammad Basil, writing, “Congratulations to Mohammad Basil Morsingnakathe for his outstanding silver medal. What a tremendous display of sprinting and determination! This success and his season’s best performance reflect his hard work and focus. I hope he continues to reach new heights in the future.”
The Prime Minister congratulated Indian long jumper Shreeshankar, who won the silver medal with a best jump of 8.09 meters. This silver medal marks Shreeshankar’s second consecutive Commonwealth Games medal in this event, having previously won silver at the Birmingham Games in 2022 with a jump of 8.08 meters.
PM Modi remarked on X, “Shreeshankar has won a fantastic silver medal! What an outstanding performance. Congratulations on winning a medal with his best jump to date. His success will inspire many young athletes to excel in athletics. Best wishes for his future efforts.”
Union Home Minister Amit Shah also praised all three athletes. He described the achievements of Gavit and Basil as a “double victory for India” and commended both para-athletes for elevating the nation’s pride.
