Piyush Goyal Meets Former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper to Strengthen Economic Ties

New Delhi, March 6: Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal met with Scott Moe, Premier of Saskatchewan, and former Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper on Friday. The discussion focused on strengthening economic relations between India and Canada.

In a post on the social media platform X, Minister Goyal shared that the meeting with Premier Moe, Harper, and their accompanying delegation was productive.

The primary topics included enhancing economic ties, exploring new avenues for cooperation, and advancing ongoing trade negotiations between India and Canada. Both parties reaffirmed their commitment to continuous dialogue and deepening bilateral partnerships.

Additionally, a recent long-term uranium supply agreement worth $2.6 billion between India and Canada has been hailed as a significant step in their bilateral relations.

Global analysts believe this agreement will bolster India’s ambitious goal of achieving 100 gigawatts of nuclear power capacity by 2047.

According to a report by the South China Morning Post, domestic uranium production in India is unlikely to meet future demands. Therefore, establishing long-term uranium import arrangements becomes essential.

Experts indicate that domestic uranium production in India is expected to fall short of total demand. This implies that India will need to rely on imports to operate existing and future nuclear reactors. Consequently, the long-term supply agreement with Canada is considered strategically vital.
