Beth Mooney takes over as captain of the Perth Scorchers for WBBL 12, succeeding Sophie Devine after her successful six-year tenure.

Perth, October 30 (Daily Kiran) : The Perth Scorchers have named Beth Mooney as their new captain for the 12th season of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL). Mooney steps into the leadership role, replacing Sophie Devine.
This decision rewards Mooney for her consistent outstanding performances, establishing her as a key player in the league. She was recognized as the Player of the Series during Australia’s campaign in the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
At 32, Mooney has scored 3,024 runs in 80 matches for the Scorchers, setting a franchise record. Before joining the Scorchers, she won the competition twice with the Brisbane Heat.
Mooney expressed her excitement about leading the Scorchers, emphasizing the significance of this opportunity in her career. “It’s a great honor to lead the Perth Scorchers in WBBL 12. Perth and the Scorchers have become a second home for me. I feel fortunate to have played alongside some incredible teammates and leaders during my time here. We have built a strong culture both on and off the field, and we take great pride in representing our state,” she said.
She also acknowledged Sophie Devine’s contributions over the past six years, stating that she looks forward to learning from her throughout the season. “We have a talented team that is hungry for success. We can’t wait to showcase our skills on the field for our members and fans,” Mooney added.
Devine concludes her six-year captaincy, during which she led the Scorchers to their first WBBL title. The New Zealand all-rounder will remain part of the team.
Head coach Becky Grundy supported Mooney’s appointment, highlighting her leadership qualities and ability to inspire the team. “Beth is an exceptional leader who sets a benchmark for those around her. Her experience at the highest level, competitive spirit, and professionalism make her the perfect person to lead this group. Since she joined, she has been a driving force in our environment, earning much respect through her preparation, performance, and support for others. We are grateful for Sophie’s contributions as our first champion captain,” Grundy remarked.
