Kolkata, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of West Bengal has reported a significant breakthrough in its inquiry into corruption. Sources within the CID revealed that Sumit Roy, the personal assistant to Trinamool Congress General Secretary and Diamond Harbour MP Abhishek Banerjee, broke down during questioning and confessed to his involvement in various financial irregularities.
Roy was arrested on Thursday in connection with an illegal land grab case in Salboni, located in the West Midnapore district. Following his arrest, he was presented in the district court on Friday, where he was remanded to CID custody for eight days.
A special CID team, which includes an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer and two officers of the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) rank, has been investigating the case since Friday evening. According to a source within the CID, Roy has started to reveal information not only about the Salboni land grab but also about his role in other major scams across the state.
Another police source indicated that investigators have uncovered details regarding transactions worth millions of rupees linked to the Salboni land scam. Authorities are currently probing how this money was distributed among various bank accounts. They are also working to identify others involved in these financial dealings and ascertain who benefited economically from the transactions.
State police officials believe that Roy’s statements could be crucial in uncovering the larger conspiracy behind these scams. Investigators are comparing the information provided by Roy with previously obtained documents, bank account details, land papers, and other evidence.
The CID is particularly interested in the connections Roy had with those who allegedly directed him in these matters. A CID source noted that investigators have discovered details of a specific bank account linked to Roy, which recorded suspicious transactions amounting to 15 crore rupees. The investigation team aims to trace the source of these funds through further questioning of Roy.
