Sukma, May 8: Significant changes are unfolding in Pollampally village, located in Sukma district of Chhattisgarh. Once affected by Naxalite influence, this area is now on a path of development. Just three months after being declared Naxal-free, a permanent ration shop has opened, providing much-needed relief to the villagers.
Previously, ration distribution was conducted through temporary arrangements at the village council building or schools. Villagers often had to stand in long lines, facing various inconveniences. However, the establishment of a dedicated ration shop in Pollampally has significantly reduced these challenges.
Residents have reported that after receiving their ration cards, they are now able to access high-quality rations. One local resident mentioned that they no longer need to wait for hours in line, as grains are now readily available on time. A salesman at the ration shop stated that he distributes rations to about 30 to 35 cardholders daily.
This facility is part of the Prime Minister’s Garib Kalyan Anna Yojana. This flagship food security program provides free grains to nearly 800 million eligible ration cardholders across the country. Under this scheme, beneficiaries from the Antyodaya Anna Yojana and the priority household category receive 5 kilograms of free rice or wheat per person each month.
The government has extended this scheme from January 1, 2024, for an additional five years, until December 2028. The primary aim of this initiative is to ensure economic and food security for impoverished families. Additionally, beneficiaries will now also receive fortified rice, enhancing their nutritional intake.
The scheme operates under the ‘One Nation, One Ration Card’ system, allowing beneficiaries to access free grains anywhere in the country using their ration cards. The newly opened ration shop in Pollampally has become more than just a convenience; it symbolizes development and renewed trust for the villagers.
