New York, March 29: The Pentagon is reportedly preparing for ground military operations in Iran that could last several weeks, as thousands of U.S. soldiers and Marines arrive in the Middle East. According to The Washington Post, if President Donald Trump decides to escalate the conflict, it could lead to a dangerous phase of warfare.
The newspaper, citing officials, noted that any potential ground operation would be less than a full-scale invasion. It may involve a combination of special operations forces and conventional infantry conducting raids. These officials spoke on the condition of anonymity.
The report indicates that U.S. troops could face various threats during such missions, including Iranian drones and missiles, ground fire, and improvised explosive devices (IEDs). Recently, the Trump administration has fluctuated between declaring that the war is winding down and warning of an escalation.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio emphasized that America can achieve all its objectives “without ground troops,” but The Washington Post reports that planning has advanced significantly. One official stated, “This is not last-minute preparation.”
Meanwhile, U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) announced that a task force of 3,500 Marines and sailors has arrived in the Middle East. CENTCOM posted on social media platform X that American sailors and Marines aboard the USS Tripoli (LHA 7) reached the area of responsibility on March 27.
According to CENTCOM, the USS Tripoli is the flagship of the Amphibious Ready Group/31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, which includes approximately 3,500 sailors and Marines, along with transport and combat aircraft and tactical resources.
As reported by the online news portal WineTenNews.com, this deployment is part of a broader U.S. military buildup related to the ongoing conflict with Iran. Amphibious forces are capable of conducting both sea assaults and ground operations.
Typically, these forces are used for rapid deployment, securing strategic locations, conducting evacuation operations, or potentially attacking coastal targets.
