Pentagon Launches Future Warfare Study Led by Elon Musk and Notable Experts

Washington, October 1 (Daily Kiran) : The U.S. Department of Defense has announced a groundbreaking initiative to explore future military strategies. A study titled “Project Meridian” will be co-led by prominent figures including Elon Musk, Palmer Luckey, and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich. The public report from this study is expected to be released within 120 days.

Secretary Pete Hegseth has initiated Project Meridian to identify the capabilities necessary for the United States to maintain military superiority in the long term. This comprehensive study will investigate potential military needs across various domains, including underground operations and lunar environments.

Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael is spearheading the project, which will involve collaboration with experts from academia, policy, and industry. The Department of Defense stated that Project Meridian will assess all aspects of future warfare, ranging from subterranean depths to lunar territories.

Hegseth has instructed that the project must be completed within 120 days. The final report will be devoid of classified information and will be made public, alongside a separate confidential section. The report is expected to provide insights and recommendations on advanced systems necessary for future conflicts, aimed at identifying technical needs and expediting the integration of these systems into the military.

The Department emphasized the importance of technological advantages for soldiers in future battles, should efforts to deter adversaries fail. Project Meridian is one of six initiatives Hegseth discussed during a speech at the Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia, addressing active-duty officers and non-commissioned officers involved in implementing these changes.

Other initiatives include the development of autonomous warfare systems, training for personnel, domestic supply chains, military bases, and religious support. Hegseth announced plans to establish the “Autonomous Warfare Command” as a four-star functional combatant command by October 1, 2027, which will enhance the use of autonomous systems across the joint forces.

Another program, “Fortress America,” aims to strengthen military bases against disruptions and reduce reliance on foreign sources for critical supplies and components. Key priorities under this initiative include independent power generation at major bases, domestic supply chains for rare earth elements and semiconductors, strategic reserves of essential goods, and protection against cyberattacks, sabotage, and drones.

Under the “Next Great American Base” project, a new military base will be established with its own power generation capabilities, automated systems, and advanced air defense. States will compete to host this base by offering land and other assistance.

Additionally, the Department has announced the “Americas Corps of Cadets,” which will include full-time programs at five universities and colleges. A new “Office of Religious Affairs” will also be created, reporting directly to Hegseth.
