Chennai, June 16: More than half of the members elected to the 17th Tamil Nadu Assembly are first-time legislators. To familiarize them with legislative processes, parliamentary traditions, and the functioning of the Assembly, the state government is organizing a two-day orientation and refresher program.
This training program will take place on June 16 and 17 at the Kalaivanar Arangam in Chennai, ahead of the first session of the newly formed Assembly. Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay will inaugurate the workshop, aimed at enhancing the legislators’ understanding of their responsibilities as elected representatives.
Tamil Nadu Assembly Speaker JCD Prabhakar stated that all members elected to the 17th Assembly have been invited to participate in this refresher course. Sessions will be held on the third floor of the Kalaivanar Arangam on both days.
Speaking to reporters at the Secretariat, the Speaker emphasized that this orientation program is specifically designed to assist new members in understanding the rules, procedures, and traditions associated with legislative work.
The workshop will also cover effective participation in debates, raising public issues, and maintaining decorum within the Assembly.
Prabhakar noted, “Chief Minister Vijay will inaugurate this innovative training program. Members will receive detailed information on appropriate conduct in the Assembly and the longstanding parliamentary traditions associated with the legislature.”
He further mentioned that a decision regarding the live broadcast of Assembly proceedings will be made soon. This initiative aims to enhance transparency and increase public participation in legislative activities.
The orientation program is taking place just days before the commencement of the first session of the 17th Tamil Nadu Assembly, which will begin on June 18 with an address from Governor Rajendra Arlekar. The address will outline the policy priorities and legislative agenda of the newly elected government.
Officials indicated that the purpose of this refresher program is to ensure that members are well-prepared for the Assembly session and are familiar with the procedural requirements of legislative work.
This initiative is particularly significant as a large number of first-time legislators have joined the new Assembly following the recent elections. Legislative training is a crucial step in strengthening parliamentary operations and democratic governance.
