Miami, April 16: Patricio Freire faced significant challenges during his fight against Aaron Pico at UFC 327. Freire (37-9 MMA, 1-2 UFC) lost by unanimous decision to fellow former Bellator star Pico (14-5 MMA, 1-1 UFC) in the featured prelim at Kaseya Center.
Pico effectively combined grappling and boxing, leaving “Pitbull” frustrated and visibly marked. Freire disclosed that he sustained severe damage to the right side of his face, impairing his vision after the first round.
“Congrats to my opponent; he was well-trained and incredibly fast,” Freire stated in a video on “X.” “Some media outlets claimed I performed well in the first round, but my performance declined sharply afterward. I took a clean shot directly in the eye while it was wide open, resulting in a fractured orbital bone and damage to my nose.
“This injury compromised my vision at the start of the second round. I could only focus on protecting myself from incoming strikes. I attempted to attack, but with limited success. I endured a barrage of strikes throughout the second round. Anyone who watched could see that this old man still has some resilience; I can take a few hits. Unfortunately, that was all I could manage given my condition.”
The former two-division Bellator champion Freire now holds a record of 1-2 in the octagon. After losing to Yair Rodriguez in his UFC debut at UFC 314, the 38-year-old bounced back with a victory over Dan Ige at UFC 318 before falling to Pico.
