NFL Reporter Dianna Russini Resigns Following Controversial Photos with Coach Mike Vrabel

Pittsburgh, April 16: NFL reporter Dianna Russini has resigned from her role at The Athletic as of April 14. This decision comes just a week after the New York Post published photos of her with New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel at a luxury resort in Arizona.

“These photos depict a completely innocent interaction, and any suggestion otherwise is laughable,” Vrabel stated in a response to the Post. “This doesn’t require any further comment.”

Mike Vrabel’s Ohio Roots Amid Speculation

Vrabel, a native of Ohio, rose to prominence as a standout player for the Ohio State Buckeyes before becoming head coach of the New England Patriots. He attended Walsh Jesuit High School in Cuyahoga Falls and was recognized as one of college football’s top defensive ends from 1993 to 1996. Vrabel earned the title of Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year during both his junior and senior years.

After his college career, he was drafted in the third round of the 1997 NFL Draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. He later played for the New England Patriots and Kansas City Chiefs, securing three Super Bowl championships with the Patriots. Vrabel retired from the NFL in 2010 and transitioned to coaching, starting as an assistant at Ohio State before joining the Houston Texans in 2014. He served as head coach of the Tennessee Titans from 2018 to 2023 and briefly consulted for the Cleveland Browns in 2024 before taking the helm at the Patriots, leading them to a Super Bowl appearance in his first season.

Details Surrounding Dianna Russini’s Resignation

In her resignation letter to The Athletic’s executive editor, Steven Ginsberg, Russini expressed gratitude for the support she received from the publication. She stated, “I have covered the NFL with professionalism and dedication throughout my career. Unfortunately, media speculation has spiraled out of control, detached from the facts. This frenzy has escalated without regard for The Athletic’s review process.”

Russini emphasized her decision to resign was not an acceptance of the narrative surrounding her but a choice to prevent further damage to her career. The New York Times, which owns The Athletic, confirmed that an investigation into Russini’s conduct was underway, citing the need for journalists to avoid conflicts of interest.

The photographs, released by the Post on April 7, show Russini and Vrabel in bathing suits by a pool and embracing on a rooftop in Sedona, Arizona, shortly before the NFL’s annual league meeting in Phoenix. Both individuals are married and have children.

Ginsberg initially defended Russini, stating that the photos were misleading and lacked context. However, following her resignation, he acknowledged that new issues had arisen during the investigation, prompting further scrutiny of her conduct.

Russini previously covered the NFL for a local NBC affiliate in Washington D.C. and worked at ESPN before joining The Athletic in 2023. She had reported on Vrabel while he was coaching the Titans.

Is Mike Vrabel Facing Any Disciplinary Action?

Currently, it appears that Vrabel will not face any disciplinary action. Patriots vice president of player personnel Eliot Wolf conducted the team’s pre-draft press conference on April 13, where he was asked about Vrabel’s involvement in draft preparations. Wolf confirmed, “Very involved. Business as usual.”

Vrabel has not spoken to reporters since his initial statement regarding the photos. He is expected to address the media during the upcoming NFL draft, scheduled for April 23-25 in Pittsburgh. USA TODAY Sports has reached out to the Patriots for further comments, but the team has not publicly acknowledged the photos or any potential violations of conduct by Vrabel.
