New Delhi, March 4: Pargat Singh is regarded as one of the legendary defenders of the Indian hockey team, known for his strong defense and leadership skills. He played a crucial role in numerous memorable matches while representing India on the international stage. Notably, he achieved the remarkable feat of scoring four goals in just six minutes to save a match for India.

Born on March 5, 1964, in Jalandhar, Punjab, Pargat Singh developed a passion for hockey from a young age. After completing his schooling, he enrolled at Lyallpur Khalsa College, where his exceptional performance earned him a spot on India’s junior hockey team.

Soon after, Pargat Singh made his way to the senior hockey team, establishing himself as a key player during a tournament held in Hong Kong.

In the 1985 Champions Trophy, Pargat Singh delivered a stunning performance that left everyone in awe. The Indian team was trailing 5-1 against Germany when Pargat Singh scored four goals in just six minutes, bringing the match to a thrilling 5-5 draw. This incredible display turned him into a national hero.

In 1986, he once again showcased his talent against the Netherlands, leading Team India to a 3-2 victory. Pargat Singh captained the Indian hockey team during the 1992 Barcelona Olympics and the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.

For his outstanding contributions to hockey, Pargat Singh was honored with the Arjuna Award in 1989 and later received the Padma Shri in 1998.

After retiring from hockey, Pargat Singh ventured into politics. He became a politician in Punjab and served as the Minister of Sports in the government.
