New Delhi, March 12: As of February 28, 2026, approximately 78.3 million micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) have been registered on the Udyam portal, generating around 345 million job opportunities. This information was shared by Union MSME Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi in Parliament on Thursday.
In response to a question in the Lok Sabha, Manjhi noted that about 137,000 MSMEs have shut down during this period. He explained that various factors can lead to the cancellation of an enterprise’s registration, including changes in ownership, lack of certificate requirements, double registration, or the closure of the business.
Manjhi stated, “The government supports state and union territory efforts through various schemes, programs, and policy initiatives, such as the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Program, Micro and Small Enterprise Loan Guarantee Scheme, and the MSME Champions Scheme.”
To facilitate loans, an emergency credit guarantee scheme worth ₹5 lakh crore was announced for businesses, including MSMEs, during the COVID-19 pandemic.
The minister highlighted that this scheme remained operational until March 31, 2023, providing guarantees to 1.13 million MSMEs. According to a research report by the State Bank of India dated January 23, 2023, approximately 1.46 million MSME accounts were saved, with around 98.3 percent belonging to the micro and small enterprise categories.
Additionally, non-tax benefits were provided for three years upon improvement in the status of MSMEs. Notably, an equity investment of ₹50,000 crore has been made through the Self-Reliant India (SRI) Fund, which includes ₹10,000 crore from the Indian government and ₹40,000 crore from private equity and venture capital funds.
The aim of this scheme is to provide growth capital to eligible and qualified units in the MSME sector. The MSME Ministry implements the Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Program (PMEGP), which is a loan-based subsidy program aimed at creating self-employment opportunities by establishing micro-enterprises in the non-agricultural sector, supporting traditional artisans and unemployed youth in rural and urban areas.
Manjhi mentioned that 39 percent of the total beneficiaries of PMEGP are women, who receive a higher subsidy (35 percent) compared to the general category (up to 25 percent).
