
Hyderabad, June 7: In a recent crackdown, police in Hyderabad and Cyberabad apprehended over 700 individuals for drunk driving during a special enforcement operation over the weekend.
The Hyderabad Traffic Police conducted a two-day special drive against drunk driving on June 5 and 6 to enhance road safety. During this operation, a total of 422 drivers were caught driving under the influence.
Similarly, the Cyberabad Traffic Police executed a special enforcement drive, resulting in the arrest of 284 violators.
According to the Hyderabad Traffic Police, among those arrested, 347 were riding two-wheelers, while 33 were operating three-wheelers and 42 were driving four-wheelers.
The violators were categorized based on their Blood Alcohol Concentration (BAC) levels. Out of the total, 91 individuals had BAC levels ranging from 30 to 50 mg/100 ml.
The police reported that 176 offenders had BAC levels between 51-100 mg/100 ml, 73 had levels between 101-150 mg/100 ml, and 40 had levels between 151-200 mg/100 ml. Additionally, 19 individuals registered BAC levels between 201-250 mg/100 ml, while 10 had levels between 251-300 mg/100 ml. The remaining 13 were found driving with BAC levels exceeding 300 mg/100 ml.
The Joint Commissioner of Police for Traffic emphasized a zero-tolerance policy towards drunk driving violations, stating that the special drive will continue. He urged the public to cooperate with the Hyderabad Traffic Police.
During the Cyberabad operation, 247 violators were found driving two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers.
According to police, 223 violators had BAC levels between 36 mg/100 ml and 200 mg/100 ml, while 33 had levels between 201 mg/100 ml and 300 mg/100 ml. Furthermore, 28 violators had BAC levels ranging from 301 mg/100 ml to 550 mg/100 ml.
All violators will be presented in court.
The Cyberabad police reiterated that drunk driving is a serious offense. If someone is found driving under the influence and causes a fatal accident, charges will be filed under Section 105 of the Indian Penal Code, 2023 (culpable homicide). This section carries a maximum penalty of 10 years in prison and fines.
In the previous week (from June 1 to June 6), a total of 164 drunk driving cases were resolved in court, resulting in two individuals receiving jail sentences and fines. The court also imposed fines on 16 individuals, ordering them to perform community service, while the remaining 146 were fined only.
