Mumbai, July 2: The Maharashtra Assembly witnessed a dramatic walkout by opposition members on Thursday after Speaker Rajesh Narvekar rejected a motion for discussion on the rising crisis of farmer suicides in the state. The opposition also expressed concerns regarding threats to Congress MLA Sajid Pathan from the notorious Bishnoi gang, amidst the ongoing agricultural crisis.
Congress Legislative Party leader Vijay Wadettiwar introduced the motion, demanding an immediate and comprehensive debate on the issue. He highlighted the alarming reports of two farmer suicides in Latur during the assembly’s monsoon session and urged the Maharashtra government to clarify its stance on the matter promptly.
The opposition accused the government of ignoring several critical issues, including the agricultural crisis, escalating financial troubles, and the increasing incidents of farmer suicides, all of which require urgent and detailed discussion in the house.
Wadettiwar called on the state government to clarify its position immediately and implement relief measures. He criticized the administration for overlooking the rising number of farmer suicides attributed to the worsening economic crisis.
Tensions escalated during the session when Wadettiwar raised a serious security threat concerning Congress MLA Sajid Pathan. According to Wadettiwar, Pathan has received threats of extortion and death from the Bishnoi gang once again. He demanded a thorough investigation into these threats and urged the government to enhance Pathan’s security immediately.
Commenting on the administration’s security allocation priorities, Wadettiwar pointed out that director Rohit Shetty has been provided with 25 security guards. He insisted that similar stringent security measures should be extended to Congress legislators facing active threats from gangs.
In response to security concerns, the Speaker clarified that the safety of elected representatives is the state’s paramount responsibility. He assured the house that necessary security arrangements would be made based on threat assessments. However, this assurance failed to satisfy the opposition.
Opposition members walked out of the house in protest against the Speaker’s decision to deny a structured debate on the agricultural crisis, emphasizing the plight of Maharashtra’s struggling farmers as their top priority.
