New Delhi, October 6 (Daily Kiran) : On October 7, leaders from the Congress party, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), and various leftist groups will stage a protest march to the office of the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) in New Delhi at 1 PM.
According to NDTV, this joint demonstration aims to address alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the voter list. The protest will support ongoing street demonstrations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
Earlier this week, members of the India Bloc marched towards the Election Commission of India headquarters in New Delhi, demanding the resignation of the Chief Electoral Officer. However, security personnel prevented the opposition leaders from reaching their destination.
During the protest, Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the opposition in the Lok Sabha, climbed police barricades and waved the national flag when security forces halted the India Bloc members from advancing to the Election Commission.
Reports indicate that police briefly detained Rahul Gandhi and his sister, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, during the incident. Speaking to reporters, Gandhi claimed that nearly 300 MPs from both houses of Parliament were blocked from meeting with the Election Commission.
He asserted that these MPs intended to discuss their concerns with Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and his two associates but were obstructed from proceeding to the office.
Following this, leaders from the India Bloc, including members of the Gandhi family, staged a sit-in at Akashvani Bhavan. They were later removed by police and taken into custody on Tuesday night.
Notably, the AAP and DMK did not participate in the protest at India Bloc. Last week, several leftist student organizations, including the AAP and SFI, protested against the Chief Election Commissioner at Jantar Mantar, resulting in multiple arrests.
In response to the opposition’s demonstrations, the BJP has criticized their actions. Union Minister Kiren Rijiju labeled the protests as a “drama” and urged Congress and other opposition parties to cease their antics and focus on serving the public selflessly to earn their mandate.
