Lula Thanks Modi for Congratulations, Pledges to Strengthen Global South Voice Together with India

Brazilian President Lula expresses gratitude to PM Modi and vows to enhance cooperation between Brazil and India on global platforms.

New Delhi, October 28 (Daily Kiran) : Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has expressed his gratitude to his “friend” Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his congratulatory message following Lula’s recent election victory. In the second round of Brazil’s presidential elections, Lula defeated his closest rival, the far-right leader Flávio Bolsonaro. This marks Lula’s return to power for a fourth term.

Lula welcomed India’s presidency of BRICS in 2026, emphasizing the commitment of both nations to collaborate on multilateral platforms and amplify the voice of the Global South.

In a message shared on the social media platform X, Lula reflected on the joy he felt recalling his visit to India in February. During that trip, both countries took significant steps to strengthen their strategic partnership, he noted.

He highlighted the importance of increasing cooperation in areas such as trade, health, and technology between Brazil and India. Lula congratulated India on its upcoming BRICS presidency, acknowledging the groundwork laid during Brazil’s leadership last year.

He assured that both countries would continue to work together in BRICS and G20 to defend multilateralism, elevate the Global South’s voice, and foster a more just, inclusive, and peaceful international order.

After his electoral win, PM Modi referred to Lula as a dear friend and emphasized their joint efforts to elevate the voice of the Global South. Lula secured 51.79% of the valid votes, while Bolsonaro received 48.21%. Remarkably, this is the first time in Brazil’s history since 1988 that a candidate who lost in the first round won in the second.
