Concerns Raised Over Labor Arrests in Noida by MP John Brittas

Noida, April 20: CPI(M) MP John Brittas has expressed serious concerns to Gautam Buddha Nagar Police Commissioner Lakshmi Singh regarding the mass arrests of workers following recent protests in Noida.

In his letter, Brittas, a member of the Rajya Sabha and leader of the CPI(M) parliamentary party, mentioned receiving a fact-finding report after a telephone conversation on April 17. The report claims that a significant number of individuals, including workers, women, and minors, were detained between April 13 and 17.

He alleged that approximately 350 minors and nearly 800 adults were held in the Kasna area, with many families unaware of their relatives’ status or whereabouts.

The letter also highlighted that some individuals were taken from their workplaces without due legal process, and they were not provided timely information regarding the reasons for their arrests or copies of FIRs, which has compromised their legal rights.

Brittas further expressed concern that the offices of the Centre of Indian Trade Unions (CITU) in Noida and Bhangeal have been sealed, and several trade union leaders are under house arrest.

He stated that police actions in a democratic system should be based on the principles of law, proportionality, and transparency. Any arbitrary actions could impact civil rights and deteriorate the industrial environment.

The MP has demanded immediate action from the police commissioner, including a review of detentions and arrests, the release of individuals held without solid grounds, ensuring adherence to legal processes, and lifting restrictions on trade union offices.

He also called for all detainees to receive legal assistance and documentation, and for police officials to be given clear instructions to strictly adhere to regulations.
