New Delhi, April 20: Union Home Minister Amit Shah commended the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) on Monday for securing convictions for 73 drug offenders in the first three months of 2026.
In a statement on the social media platform X, Shah emphasized that the Modi government is relentlessly working to eradicate drug syndicates to protect the youth from the scourge of narcotics.
He noted that under this initiative, the NCB has successfully convicted 73 drug offenders, demonstrating a firm commitment to dismantling every corner of drug trafficking networks.
Recently, Minister of State for Home Affairs Nityanand Rai stated that the NCB, in collaboration with the Inter-Operable Criminal Justice System (ICJS), has developed a diagnostic tool (NIDAAN) that integrates data on arrested offenders from all drug-related law enforcement agencies across the country. This includes identification details, photographs, fingerprints, case specifics, and court-related information.
Rai explained that this tool assists investigative agencies in opposing bail, seeking bail revocation, monitoring habitual offenders, and preparing proposals under the Prevention of Illicit Trafficking in Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1988, thereby strengthening coordinated and proactive enforcement actions.
Detailing the ongoing fight against drug trafficking networks in the country, he mentioned that the government has approved a plan to modernize forensic capabilities, allocating ₹420 crores for the modernization/upgradation of forensic science laboratories (FSL) in states and union territories.
He added that financial assistance is being provided to eligible states under the assistance scheme for drug control to strengthen enforcement capabilities against the illegal trafficking of NDPS substances.
