Bhubaneswar, August 9: Naveen Patnaik, the president of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and leader of the opposition in the Odisha Assembly, reiterated his demand on Sunday for the inclusion of 169 tribal communities in the Scheduled Tribe (ST) list. He emphasized that the party will continue its efforts to secure rights and recognition for these communities.
Speaking at an event held at the BJD office in Bhubaneswar on the occasion of World Tribal Day, Patnaik stated that empowering tribal communities has always been central to the development and welfare policies of the BJD government.
He noted that several significant initiatives have been launched during the BJD government to promote the development and empowerment of tribal society. Various measures have been taken to improve their status in higher education, livelihoods, and other areas, aiming to make them self-reliant.
Patnaik described the BJD as a “true friend” of the tribal brothers and sisters, highlighting that his government has made several important decisions for their welfare. These include granting rights to collect forest produce in panchayats, establishing thousands of hostels, implementing the ‘Anvesha’ program for higher education, and ensuring land rights for forest dwellers.
He stated that these initiatives have helped integrate tribal communities into the mainstream of development. Patnaik affirmed that the BJD has consistently stood firm in protecting the rights and culture of tribal society.
Referring to the special development councils (SDCs) established during the BJD government, he noted that this was a unique initiative aimed at preserving tribal art and culture.
He remarked, “The special development councils set up in 23 districts have made tribal people equal partners in the development process. This has enabled them to enhance their livelihoods while preserving their religious sites, arts, crafts, music, and traditions.”
Patnaik emphasized that the BJD government’s policy has been to empower tribal communities and provide them with opportunities to live with dignity on their land. He also mentioned a proposal sent to the central government during the BJD’s tenure, which called for the inclusion of 169 tribal communities in the ST list.
Reiterating this demand, he stated that efforts to include these communities in the ST list will continue. He urged the public to respect the knowledge, traditions, and culture of tribal communities and to work sincerely for their preservation.
