Bhubaneswar, August 18: The Odisha Vigilance Department arrested a doctor on Monday at the Capital Hospital in Bhubaneswar for allegedly demanding and accepting a bribe. The doctor is accused of accepting ₹30,000 in exchange for signing necessary work certificates for the release of salaries for employees of a non-governmental organization (NGO) working at the hospital.
The accused has been identified as Dr. Satyajit Behera, who holds the position of assistant surgeon at the Capital Hospital. According to the Odisha Vigilance Department, the hospital appointed this NGO to assist unidentified and needy patients coming to the emergency department.
Reports indicate that since June 2026, the NGO’s official had been requesting Dr. Behera to sign the work certificates for their employees. However, it is alleged that Dr. Behera demanded ₹30,000 from the NGO official in exchange for signing the necessary certificates for the withdrawal of salaries for June and July 2026. Following this alleged demand, the NGO official contacted vigilance authorities, who set a trap and caught Dr. Behera red-handed accepting the bribe on Monday.
Facing extortion and harassment, the complainant informed the vigilance authorities about the situation. Consequently, a team from the Odisha Vigilance Department apprehended Dr. Behera while he was accepting the ₹30,000 bribe. The department reported that the bribe amount was seized from Dr. Behera.
Furthermore, the department stated that following this action, simultaneous searches are being conducted at three locations associated with Dr. Behera to uncover any disproportionate assets. In this regard, the Bhubaneswar Vigilance Police Station has registered a case under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption (Amendment) Act, 2018, on August 16.
The vigilance department has confirmed that the investigation against Dr. Behera is ongoing to gather further information regarding the case. Notably, Chief Minister Mohan Chandra Majhi recently dismissed Dr. Patitpaban Barik, a doctor stationed at the Gurandi Community Health Center in Gajapati district, over corruption allegations.
