Bhopal, August 18: In a significant operation, police in Madhya Pradesh‘s Sagar district seized ₹3.02 crore in cash from the home of a taxi driver. Authorities are now investigating the source of the cash and its ownership. The police have shared details of the seizure with the Income Tax Department and other relevant agencies.
The operation took place on Sunday at the residence of Saurabh Ahirwar in the Tili Tigadda area, following a tip-off from a social media post that showed Ahirwar holding what appeared to be a firearm.
While no weapons were found during the raid, police discovered bags filled with cash inside a locked cupboard. They brought in a cash-counting machine to tally the seized amount. This discovery has raised questions about the cash’s origin and its rightful owner.
According to police, the family claimed that the money belonged to their relative, Ramesh Kumar Ahirwar, a retired engineer from the Public Works Department in Bhopal, who currently works as a Chief General Manager on contract with the Madhya Pradesh Road Development Corporation (MPRRDA).
However, Ramesh Ahirwar denied ownership of the cash and questioned why his name was being associated with it.
Sagar’s Superintendent of Police, Anurag Sujania, stated, “Approximately ₹3 crore has been seized. The cash has been secured, and investigators are verifying its source and ownership. We are sharing information with the Income Tax Department and other relevant agencies for further investigation.”
The police reported that the family informed investigators that Ramesh had visited their home with his wife, where they placed bags of cash in a newly purchased cupboard before leaving with the key. The cupboard was found locked, and the key was not available in the house. During the search, police managed to unlock the cupboard. They questioned family members but later released them.
Investigators are trying to determine how the cash arrived at the residence and whether it is linked to any illegal activities. Relevant agencies may examine financial records and other necessary evidence. Police are also verifying the social media post that prompted the raid.
The family insists that the object in Ahirwar’s hand was a lighter shaped like a gun. No weapons were recovered from the house.
