Odisha Police Arrests 346 in Major Crackdown Ahead of Festival Season

Cuttack, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : Odisha police have launched a significant operation targeting criminals and illegal activities statewide ahead of the festive season. This initiative, termed the “Daman” campaign, resulted in the arrest of 346 individuals and the execution of 1,448 non-bailable warrants.

The operation began on September 21, following directives from Director General of Police (DGP) Vinay Tosh Mishra. Its primary aim is to ensure safety and security during the upcoming festivals while curbing drug trafficking and illegal liquor sales. The campaign involved collaboration among district police, commissionerate police, railway police, and other state police units.

During the operation, authorities initiated actions against 1,012 individuals under Section 129 of the Indian National Security Act. In the fight against drugs, police registered 89 cases under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, leading to 109 arrests. They seized approximately 8.13 tons of cannabis and destroyed 19,387 cannabis plants. Additionally, 394.645 grams of brown sugar and 1,066 bottles of cough syrup were confiscated.

In enforcing liquor laws, police recorded 1,707 cases and arrested 140 people. The operation yielded the seizure of 10,298.24 liters of illegal country liquor, 2,922.409 liters of foreign liquor, 1,092.54 liters of Aska-40, 800 kilograms of fermented wash, and 81 liters of Mahua liquor.

Police also addressed gambling offenses, registering 46 cases and arresting 67 individuals, seizing ₹436,086 in the process. In recovery cases, 16 cases were filed with 12 arrests made, resulting in the confiscation of ₹10,520. Furthermore, six cases related to illegal weapons, ammunition, and explosives were recorded, with authorities seizing five firearms, a revolver, four cartridges, a magazine, 2.5 kilograms of gunpowder, and two swords.

In a bid to prevent the movement of criminals and the trafficking of drugs, alcohol, weapons, and other illegal items, police conducted blockades and secured 1,830 locations. Security checks were intensified on inter-district and inter-state routes.

DGP Vinay Tosh Mishra emphasized that the police will continue their efforts to maintain law and order, control crime, and provide a safe and peaceful environment for the public during the festive season.
