Kolkata, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : On October 4, during the final day of campaigning for the Nandigram Assembly by-election, West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari took aim at former Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, referencing the events of the 2021 Assembly elections.
Adhikari alleged that the previous Trinamool Congress government misused the state’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to file false charges against Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders, claiming attempts on their lives based on Banerjee’s injury during her campaign. This injury occurred on March 10, 2021, in Nandigram.
As the upcoming by-election approaches, discussions surrounding the nature of Banerjee’s injury and claims of a “broken leg” have resurfaced, reigniting political debates. Responding to the controversy, Adhikari quipped about the possibility of West Bengal observing March 10 as a “Day of Lies.”
On Sunday, Adhikari marched in Nandigram to support BJP candidate Hasi Rani Rath, who is the mother of his late aide, Chandranath Rath. He reiterated his stance on Banerjee’s injury, questioning why a case was filed against BJP leaders if no evidence of broken bones exists in government records.
The Chief Minister asserted that the previous Trinamool government harassed BJP leaders based on entirely false accusations. He claimed that while an attempt on life was alleged, there was no proof of broken bones in official medical documentation.
During a press conference on Saturday, Adhikari presented a document he claimed was Banerjee’s medical report, asserting it lacked evidence of any broken bones. He also stated that necessary legal actions would be taken once the Model Code of Conduct is lifted.
Adhikari emphasized that individuals genuinely affected or falsely implicated should receive legal protection. Conversely, he warned that those who knowingly file false complaints could face penalties under the Indian Penal Code.
He called on voters in Nandigram to increase the margin of victory for the BJP candidate, urging them to support Hasi Rani Rath by an even greater margin than in previous elections. Additionally, he commented on the minority vote bank, noting that the BJP had received minimal support from minority voters in the last three elections. He expressed curiosity about whether this trend would change in the upcoming polls.
