Awareness and Parental Responsibility Key to Child Protection, Say Delhi Officials

New Delhi, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : In New Delhi, a recent event highlighted the importance of raising awareness and ensuring societal responsibility regarding the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Notable speakers included Lata Gupta, Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Women, Om Prakash Vyas, Chairperson of the Delhi Commission for Protection of Child Rights (DCPCR), and BJP legislator Shikha Rai, who discussed various issues related to child safety.

Lata Gupta pointed out that while the POCSO Act was enacted in 2012, the issue of sexual crimes against children existed long before its introduction. She noted that public awareness has historically helped bring such cases to light. However, many individuals still advise victims to remain silent and not speak out. The introduction of the POCSO Act has fostered public discourse on this issue, empowering victims to voice their experiences and facilitating action against perpetrators.

Gupta praised the work being done by NGOs in three states related to POCSO cases and the data they have presented. She emphasized that solutions to this problem can be found through increased public awareness and urged individuals to understand the provisions of the POCSO Act while remaining vigilant about child safety.

Om Prakash Vyas echoed these sentiments, stressing that merely observing a “Child Safety Month” is insufficient for resolving the issue. He stated that parents must recognize their responsibilities in raising and protecting their children for real change to occur. Vyas called for involvement from all segments of society to ensure better upbringing for children.

BJP legislator Shikha Rai also addressed accusations against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar made by the opposition. She urged the opposition to raise similar issues in states where they hold power, asserting that the Election Commission operates uniformly across all regions. Rai dismissed the opposition’s claims as baseless and nonsensical.

Furthermore, she commended the “Samaadhan Abhiyan,” which plays a vital role in educating the public about laws, raising awareness of children’s rights, and providing legal assistance to victims. She emphasized that community participation is essential to effectively disseminate the campaign’s message across various societal segments.
