BJP and VHP Advocate for Uniform Civil Code as Essential for Gender Justice; Opposition Claims Its an RSS Agenda

New Delhi, October 4 (Daily Kiran) : Political discussions surrounding the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) have intensified in New Delhi. BJP spokesperson RP Singh highlighted that several states, including Madhya Pradesh, have passed UCC bills and sent them to the President. He welcomed the formation of a committee in West Bengal to draft the UCC.

BJP leader Agnimitra Paul and VHP president Alok Kumar emphasized that the UCC is necessary for achieving gender justice. In contrast, CPI(M) leader Hannan Mollah accused the initiative of being an RSS agenda aimed at marginalizing Muslims, while TMC MP Dola Sen raised concerns about the administration’s effectiveness.

Speaking on the UCC, Singh stated, “Other states like Madhya Pradesh have passed related bills and sent them to the President. Once approved, they will be implemented. The initiative to form a committee in West Bengal for discussion and drafting the UCC is commendable. All daughters in the country deserve equal rights, regardless of their religion or caste. We must also abolish laws allowing multiple marriages.”

Agnimitra Paul responded to Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari’s remarks about implementing the UCC by noting that this topic was previously mentioned in the assembly. “Why not? A reform in the civil code is necessary. Every citizen should be treated equally, and all rules and laws should apply uniformly.”

VHP’s Alok Kumar added that valid reasons must exist for divorce, and legal proceedings should be followed. He pointed out that it is unfair for a widow to be left without a share in her deceased husband’s property, emphasizing the need for UCC provisions that address such issues to ensure gender justice.

CPI(M) former MP Hannan Mollah criticized the UCC initiative, stating it is part of an RSS program aimed at eliminating Muslims. “If the Chief Minister does not implement it, who will? They are blinded by power and will destroy democracy for their communal agenda.”

In response to CM Suvendu’s statements on the UCC, TMC MP Dola Sen remarked that it is better for the administration to refrain from excessive commentary. She noted that in the past six months, there has been more talk than action, highlighting how small businesses have faced threats from bulldozers, and projects initiated by Mamata Banerjee have been repackaged under a different name.

Congress MP Manoj Kumar criticized the central government, stating, “Go ahead and do what you want. You have stolen votes to form the government, so it’s expected you will act this way. You lack any substantial public interest issues. Remember, you won’t remain in power for long; the country has decided to remove the BJP from power.”

He warned that while they may create an atmosphere of fear and demolish mosques, their time in power is limited, and even their supporters are beginning to voice dissent.
