Bhubaneswar, February 13: A special NDPS court in Bhubaneswar has sentenced two drug traffickers to ten years of rigorous imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh each. This information was confirmed by an official on Friday.
The Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) officer from the Bhubaneswar zonal unit reported that the court, presided over by the third Additional District and Sessions Judge, handed down the sentence to Mangal Ram Mahto and Kumar Dili, both residents of Dhanbad.
The convicts were found guilty under Sections 20(B), 25, and 29 of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. According to officials, the case dates back to May 28, 2023, when NCB officers apprehended the two accused at Rasulgarh Chowk in Bhubaneswar with 273.8 kg of cannabis.
Subsequent investigations revealed that the accused were part of an interstate smuggling racket, where the cannabis was cleverly concealed in a specially designed cavity within the truck’s driver cabin. A charge sheet against both defendants was filed in November 2023, and the truck used for transporting the illegal goods was also seized.
In a related development, the NCB announced on Thursday that two drug traffickers were convicted in the significant Ahmedabad Alprazolam trafficking case. A special NDPS court in Ahmedabad sentenced Govind Suryavanshi Chamar from Ratlam, Madhya Pradesh, and Sheikh Mohammad Idrish from Ahmedabad to nine years of rigorous imprisonment, along with fines of ₹1 lakh each.
This case is linked to the seizure of 91 grams of Alprazolam at Kalupur railway station in Ahmedabad in May 2023, which led to the arrest of both traffickers.
These sentences reflect the NCB’s commitment to dismantling organized drug trafficking networks operating across state borders. The bureau emphasized its mission to combat the dangers posed by narcotics and protect society from the adverse effects of drug abuse.
The NCB has also called upon citizens to assist in tackling drug trafficking. Information related to drug sales can be shared anonymously by calling the MANAS National Narcotics Helpline at the toll-free number 1933.
