Kashmiri Pandits Face Threats Amid Controversy, Kiran Wattal Calls for Accountability

Srinagar, August 29: Kiran Wattal, the coordinator of the World Kashmiri Society, has responded to recent threats faced by Kashmiri Pandits and the controversy involving comedians Sharon Verma and Samay Raina. Wattal labeled these threats as part of a conspiracy by enemy nations, recalling similar threats from 1985-86 and 1999 that led to tragic massacres. He criticized the comedians for making light of a community that has endured suffering for 36 years, calling it shameful to exploit their plight for television ratings.

Wattal emphasized, “The threats we are receiving today echo those from 1985, 1986, and 1999, which resulted in massacres. Along with threats, there were numerous killings. The atmosphere back then was vastly different from today. The Kashmiri community now stands with us and wishes for peace. These threats are supported by our enemy nations, who want to reclaim the territory by forcing people to leave.”

He noted that the public does not support these threats, which are backed by foreign adversaries. However, the Kashmiri Pandit community has shown remarkable courage and resilience. A recent Mahadev Yatra saw a large turnout, with effective arrangements made by the administration, allowing elders, women, and children from the community to participate. This reflects the ground reality of their strength.

Wattal stated, “Such threats will persist, but the government must assess law and order from their perspective. They should investigate who is issuing these threats and what message it sends to the community. If the situation is improving, why are these threats being made? Currently, about 80-85% of the situation is normal.”

Regarding the controversy with comedians Sharon Verma and Samay Raina, he remarked, “These comedy shows are mere theatrics. They lack any moral compass and can mock the oppressed for their entertainment. Sharon thought that making jokes about a community that has suffered for 36 years would boost his ratings. He should feel ashamed. Society will respond to him decisively. I would also advise Samay Raina to stay within his limits and not make a mockery of serious issues. He should have reacted immediately and stopped the show, especially given the numerous killings that have occurred.”
