Lucknow, March 13: BJP leader Rakesh Tripathi stated that India has secured agreements for petroleum products with several countries, ensuring an adequate supply within the nation. He emphasized that there is no shortage of petroleum in India. However, he accused certain political parties of deliberately spreading rumors to instill fear among the public.
Tripathi urged citizens to avoid such petty politics, stressing that any actions causing harm to the public should be avoided. He acknowledged that while the opposition has the right to criticize and question the government, they should not create problems for the citizens.
On March 12, Prime Minister Modi addressed concerns regarding disruptions in oil and gas supplies due to the Iran conflict. He assured that the government is making every effort to safeguard India’s energy security. Modi highlighted the steps taken since 2014 to make India self-reliant in the energy sector, resulting in significant savings for the country.
He pointed out that prior to 2014, India had very limited storage capacity for strategic petroleum reserves. Now, the country has substantial reserves. Modi mentioned the establishment of a strategic petroleum reserve facility with a total capacity of 5.33 million metric tons (MMT), which can act as a buffer against short-term supply shocks due to geopolitical conflicts. This facility aims to meet approximately 9.5 days of crude oil needs. Additionally, oil marketing companies (OMCs) in the country have storage facilities for crude oil and petroleum products sufficient for 64.5 days.
The total national capacity for storing crude oil and petroleum products currently stands at 74 days. Modi reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that Indian citizens do not face any issues due to wars occurring in various parts of the world. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure uninterrupted energy supply, with 5 million LPG cylinders being distributed daily. Consumers are advised to avoid panic booking of cooking gas.
