No Clash Between Central Forces and Bengal Police: Ajay Kumar Nand

Kolkata, March 17: Kolkata’s new Police Commissioner, Ajay Kumar Nand, stated on Tuesday that there has been no clash between the West Bengal Police and central forces since the announcement of assembly elections in the state last week.

He mentioned that central forces will provide indirect support during the upcoming assembly elections in West Bengal. Nand made these comments just a day after taking office.

“Deployment of central forces during elections is done in phases. They provide indirect support, and we also need to obtain permission. Clear guidelines regarding the deployment of central armed police forces should be established to prevent any conflict,” he said.

The Kolkata Police Commissioner dismissed allegations of a lack of coordination with central forces during the upcoming state elections, asserting, “Reviewing established procedures shows that communication occurs. Designated nodal officers are in place, and specific timelines are set.”

He also assured that the upcoming state elections in West Bengal will be conducted in a free and fair manner. “Currently, this is the sole objective for both myself and the Kolkata Police,” he added.

According to Nand, the Kolkata Police is committed to ensuring the safety of the city’s residents during the state elections. Since the announcement of the election schedule, several complaints have emerged, including incidents of political posters being torn down.

Commissioner Nand stated that these cases will be thoroughly investigated. “I will ensure that I do not fail in my role as a leader,” he emphasized.

Meanwhile, he noted that the Kolkata Police is fully capable of handling situations like the incident that occurred on March 15 outside the residence of West Bengal minister Shashi Panja in Girish Park. Following this incident, allegations arose that central forces were not called in time. Nand refuted these claims, stating that no central force personnel were present in the vicinity at that time.

He also mentioned that the current presence of central forces within the state is limited. The investigation into this incident is ongoing.

Nand reiterated, “The Kolkata Police is fully capable of managing such situations. At that time, no central forces were nearby. The entire incident unfolded in a very short period. However, this does not mean we are unable to handle such situations.”

He further stated, “Currently, there is no significant presence of central forces within the state. We manage law and order ourselves and also monitor public gatherings and processions.”
