Tuensang, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : In Nagaland’s Tuensang district, nine individuals have died in the past three days due to suspected consumption of toxic liquor. Among the deceased are three members of the same family.
In response to the incident, state police have issued a red alert, advising residents against consuming alcohol from unknown or unauthorized sources.
Authorities report that the victims experienced difficulty breathing after allegedly consuming contaminated alcohol, leading to their deaths. While the exact causes of death have not been officially confirmed, Nagaland’s Director General of Police, Rupin Sharma, indicated that initial findings suggest the fatalities are linked to the consumption of poisonous liquor.
According to an official statement, the deaths occurred on September 10 and 11 in Tuensang town and the Chendang Saddle area. The statement noted that all fatalities appear to be directly or indirectly related to alcohol consumption, and investigations are ongoing in this regard.
Additionally, a family member of an individual involved in selling the liquor was found dead from hanging, with police treating it as a potential suicide.
Tuensang police discovered a similar pattern in the deaths of individuals admitted to hospitals. Preliminary investigations revealed that most victims had consumed alcohol before showing symptoms.
Symptoms among the deceased included blurred vision, severe headaches, dizziness, nausea, and vomiting. Police have indicated that toxic or adulterated alcohol is the likely cause of death, although final confirmation will await scientific investigation.
The investigation will incorporate scientific and forensic procedures. It was also noted that in many cases, post-mortems could not be conducted as the bodies were cremated before the police were informed of the death patterns.
Currently, the investigation relies on available medical records, initial inquiries, and other gathered information. Tuensang police are conducting a thorough examination of the circumstances surrounding the deaths while trying to determine the source and nature of the alcohol involved, as well as any potential accountability.
Reports indicate that three members of the same family were among the deceased, and some of them allegedly purchased alcohol from their premises.
To ascertain the true causes of death and the nature of the alcohol, scientific and medical investigations are being carried out in collaboration with various relevant departments.
Police have launched extensive searches and raids in Tuensang town and the Chendang Saddle area, focusing on suspected unauthorized, fake, or adulterated liquor. Approximately 470 bottles of Indian-made foreign liquor (IMFL) and beer cans were seized during the operation.
A police officer stated that a public awareness campaign is also underway to educate people about the dangers of consuming alcohol from unknown or unauthorized sources.
