NHRC Takes Notice of Warehouse Collapse in Kolkata, Issues Warnings to Officials

New Delhi, July 2: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognizance of the tragic collapse of a warehouse under construction in the Taratala area of Kolkata. Reports indicate that the incident resulted in the deaths of 16 workers and left 20 others injured.

The NHRC stated that if the media reports are accurate, this incident represents a serious violation of human rights. The commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of West Bengal, the Kolkata Police Commissioner, and the Municipal Commissioner, demanding a detailed report within two weeks.

The NHRC expects the report to include the status of the investigation and details regarding compensation provided to the families of the deceased and injured, if any.

According to the NHRC, the incident occurred on June 24, when the concrete casting of the iron structure of the warehouse unexpectedly collapsed, trapping around 40 workers at the construction site under the debris.

Media reports suggest that the approved building plan was flawed, which led to this disaster.

On Wednesday, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation suspended an Officer on Special Duty (OSD) who was arrested in connection with the incident. The OSD remained in police custody for over 72 hours.

The police are currently investigating allegations of irregularities in the approval of the building plan.

Earlier, the Chief Minister of West Bengal announced a compensation of 1 million rupees from the state treasury for the families of the deceased and 100,000 rupees for each injured person.

Additionally, the Prime Minister’s Office has declared compensation of 200,000 rupees for the families of the deceased and 50,000 rupees for each injured individual from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
