New Delhi, May 8: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has requested a report from the Jharkhand government and the district police chief regarding the death of a 19-year-old female inmate at a remand home located in the Charakhi Pahadi area of Deoghar district.
The NHRC took suo motu cognizance of media reports concerning the suspicious circumstances surrounding the inmate’s death on May 2. The cause of her death remains unclear. The NHRC noted that if the media reports are accurate, it raises serious concerns about human rights violations.
The commission has issued notices to the Chief Secretary of Jharkhand and the Superintendent of Police in Deoghar, demanding a detailed report within two weeks.
According to media reports published on May 4, the inmate’s condition deteriorated suddenly, prompting staff at the remand home to rush her to Deoghar Sadar Hospital, where she later died during treatment.
It has been reported that five inmates have died at this remand home since January 1, 2026, raising questions about its safety and management.
In a separate case, the NHRC also took notice on May 2 of the deaths of two sanitation workers while cleaning a sewer at the Puri Pranayama Society in Greater Faridabad, Haryana. Reports indicate that the workers entered a manhole without any safety equipment or gas masks, following instructions from the building’s estate manager.
The NHRC found that if the media reports are true, this also constitutes a serious human rights violation. Consequently, notices have been issued to the Municipal Commissioner and Police Commissioner of Faridabad, demanding a detailed report within two weeks. This report should include the status of the investigation and details of compensation provided to the victims’ families.
The commission expressed concern that such incidents continue to occur in the country, despite guidelines issued by the Supreme Court and recommendations from the NHRC.
