Auckland, March 23: New Zealand Cricket is taking significant steps to revamp its domestic T20 structure. The board has proposed the ‘NZ20’ franchise league as a primary option to replace the 21-year-old Super Smash tournament.
While the decision is not final, it opens the door for further discussions regarding the ‘NZ20’ league. The board will now focus on essential aspects such as commercial viability, structure, and governance for this new league. If all conditions are met satisfactorily, the ‘NZ20’ league could officially launch.
Diana Pouketapu-Linden, chairperson of New Zealand Cricket, stated that this decision was made after careful consideration. The board discussed two major options: a potential expansion into Australia’s Women’s Big Bash League and the proposal for the ‘NZ20’ league. After evaluating all factors, ‘NZ20’ was deemed the better choice. She emphasized that it is time to present the old Super Smash tournament in a new light to make it more attractive and competitive. Expert reports, including advice from Deloitte and feedback from cricket stakeholders, were also taken into account.
However, some changes will be necessary before final approval of the ‘NZ20’ proposal. New Zealand Cricket aims to include a women’s domestic T20 competition in this new league, ensuring it receives equal importance. Additionally, regional representation for teams will be prioritized, allowing local fans to connect closely with their players.
The board also considers it crucial for the league’s governance, control, and equity framework to be transparent and balanced. New Zealand Cricket believes its brand value is strong on an international level, bolstered by impressive performances in ICC tournaments.
The New Zealand women’s cricket team (White Ferns) is the current T20 World Cup champion, while the men’s team (Black Caps) recently reached the finals of the T20 World Cup 2026. Pouketapu-Linden remarked that this is an exciting time for New Zealand cricket, and the board aims to make decisions that will benefit the future of the sport.
