New Delhi, October 10 (Daily Kiran) : New Zealand’s cricket team has faced a significant setback ahead of their series against India, as fast bowler Will O’Rourke has been ruled out due to injury. The 25-year-old is currently dealing with issues related to his left hamstring and calf and is undergoing rehabilitation.
According to New Zealand Cricket, O’Rourke is being given time to recover. The management is cautious, especially with a crucial four-Test series against Australia approaching in December and January.
Head coach Rob Walter expressed disappointment over O’Rourke’s absence from such a major tour. “It is frustrating that Will has to miss this significant series against India at home. He was part of our plans for both the ODI and Test series. However, after discussions, we all agreed he should take more time to recover from his injuries,” Walter stated.
He added, “Our fast-bowling resources will be crucial in the coming months, so we are taking the best approach for Will’s return. We want him to be fully fit before stepping back onto the field. Ideally, he will return to play for Canterbury in the Plunket Shield by the end of December and, if all goes well, be ready for the first Test against Australia in Perth on December 9.”
O’Rourke’s recent career has been marred by injuries. He made his comeback in April this year after a seven-month absence due to a stress fracture in his back. He played all three Tests against England in June, but suffered a hamstring strain on the final day of the third Test in Nottingham. Since then, he has not participated in any competitive matches, with a calf strain during training in August further delaying his return.
New Zealand is set to announce their squad for the India series on Sunday. The Indian team is scheduled to play five T20s, five ODIs, and two Tests during their tour of New Zealand.
