Ranchi, October 10 (Daily Kiran) : In a thrilling T20 encounter on October 10, India faced a shocking defeat against the West Indies in Ranchi. The match, marked by high scores, saw the West Indies clinch victory by six wickets, marking their largest chase in T20 history.
Batting first, India set a formidable target, scoring 249 runs for the loss of five wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Sanju Samson led the charge with an impressive 82 runs, supported by Ishan Kishan’s 43, Shreyas Iyer‘s 40, and Tilak Varma’s unbeaten 44.
However, the West Indies responded aggressively, with captain Shai Hope smashing a quickfire 102 off just 45 balls, including nine sixes and six fours. Sharneef Rutherford also made a significant contribution with 84 runs off 37 balls, featuring seven sixes and as many fours. The West Indies reached 252 runs in just 18.3 overs, sealing a remarkable victory.
While the West Indies deserved full credit for their performance, questions arose regarding India’s team management and strategy. A crucial decision was made when Iyer, who was ready to bat, was replaced by Shivam Dube after Kishan’s dismissal. This choice proved detrimental.
India lost their second wicket at 139 runs in the 11th over, and with Iyer set to follow Kishan, the team’s momentum faltered. Dube, known for his ability to hit big against spinners, struggled and managed only seven runs off ten balls. His early dismissal slowed India’s scoring rate, leaving them at least 30 runs short of what could have been a winning total.
Had Iyer, who previously scored a century and was in good form, batted instead of Dube, India might have surpassed the 280-run mark, potentially altering the match’s outcome.
