Hyderabad, September 13 (Daily Kiran) : Obesity has emerged as a significant health challenge globally, with approximately 2.5 billion adults struggling with overweight or obesity issues. In light of this, ongoing research continues to explore various methods for effective weight loss, including dietary changes, exercise, and lifestyle modifications.
A recent review conducted by the ICMR-National Institute of Nutrition in Hyderabad examined the effects of different lifestyle-based approaches on weight and metabolic health. This comprehensive review analyzed 112 systematic reviews and meta-analyses, encompassing data from 2,332 randomized controlled trials and approximately 248,000 participants from over 50 countries.
The findings indicate that programs combining diet and physical activity lead to more substantial weight loss and improved heart and metabolic health. Participants who followed a combined approach lost an average of 3.68 kilograms more than those who focused solely on one method over a follow-up period exceeding 12 months.
Interestingly, a low-calorie diet showed the most significant weight loss effects within the first three months, resulting in an average loss of 2.64 kilograms more than the comparison group. However, to maintain weight loss over the long term, it is crucial to incorporate regular physical activity and positive behavioral changes alongside dietary efforts.
The study also highlighted the broader health benefits of physical activity beyond weight loss. Notably, it observed reductions in systolic blood pressure during the 6 to 12-month follow-up period. Furthermore, participants who engaged in both diet and exercise programs experienced improvements in blood glucose levels and insulin resistance, underscoring the positive impact on metabolic health.
A key takeaway from this review is that significant weight loss is not always necessary for health benefits. The research suggests that improvements in lifestyle can yield numerous advantages, regardless of the amount of weight lost. Therefore, even if an individual does not achieve the commonly recommended goal of losing 5 to 10 percent of their body weight, maintaining a nutritious diet, regular exercise, and adopting a positive lifestyle can still provide substantial health benefits.
