Ayurveda and Microbiome Research Highlighted in ITRA Jamnagar Workshop

Jamnagar, September 12 (Daily Kiran) : A three-day workshop titled “Understanding Health and Wellness Through Microbiome Research” took place at the Institute of Teaching and Research in Ayurveda (ITRA) in Jamnagar from September 9 to 11, 2026. Organized under the Ministry of AYUSH, the event aimed to familiarize participants with recent developments in microbiome research and its potential role in health and wellness from an Ayurvedic perspective.

The workshop featured distinguished speakers, including Professor Sharmila Mandre from the AYUSH Ministry and Dr. Tarini Shankar Ghosh, an assistant professor at IIIT Delhi. They addressed various sessions, sharing insights on modern theories, research methodologies, and emerging scientific evidence related to microbiome science. Participants gained a deeper understanding of the possible impacts of microbiome research on human health.

Discussions centered on the connections between Ayurvedic knowledge and contemporary microbiome science. Topics included diet, digestion, metabolism, health promotion, and personalized health and wellness. The program emphasized the necessity of interdisciplinary and evidence-based research to develop scientifically validated knowledge and strengthen the scientific foundation of Ayurveda.

The workshop concluded with a discussion session led by ITRA Director Professor Tanuja Naseri, focusing on the possibilities for collaborative and multi-centric research. The session explored scientific studies on key Ayurvedic concepts such as Agni (digestion and metabolism), diet, nature, healthy lifestyles, and Ayurvedic treatment methods in relation to gut microbial communities.

A total of 52 educators and researchers participated in this workshop, which played a crucial role in facilitating knowledge exchange, scientific dialogue, and identifying new opportunities for future collaborative research. Experts believe this initiative will strengthen interdisciplinary research between Ayurveda and modern science. Microbiome research offers new avenues for understanding traditional Ayurvedic concepts through a modern scientific lens, particularly in preventive health, nutrition, digestive health, metabolic health, and overall wellness.

ITRA stated that this workshop is part of its ongoing efforts to promote evidence-based, interdisciplinary, and public health-focused research in Ayurveda, aiming to transform traditional knowledge into scientifically validated health and wellness approaches.
