Beijing, February 22: The Chinese National Immigration Administration estimates that during the Spring Festival holidays, the average daily number of travelers arriving and departing at ports across the country will exceed 20.5 million. This marks an increase of 14.1% compared to last year’s Spring Festival holidays. More foreign tourists are traveling to China to experience its culture, explore, and shop during this festive period.
The influx of foreign tourists has led to a surge in consumption. Data from China’s State Taxation Administration reveals that in 2025, the number of foreign tourists applying for departure tax refunds increased by 305% year-on-year. Additionally, the volume of goods sold eligible for tax refunds and the total amount refunded saw year-on-year increases of 95.9% and 95.8%, respectively.
The shopping lists of incoming tourists are also evolving. Alongside international brands, the number of products exclusive to China is on the rise. Many tourists are specifically visiting stores to experience high-tech products highlighted on social media during their trips to China.
Items such as foldable screen phones and drones are particularly popular. Foreign tourists express that Chinese smart products are “well-made, of excellent quality, and incredibly diverse.”
The introduction of visa-free policies and easier entry methods has consistently boosted the popularity of “traveling in China” and “shopping in China.” Data from the National Immigration Administration indicates that in 2025, 30.08 million foreigners entered China visa-free, representing a year-on-year increase of 49.5%.
