New Chapter in India-Trinidad Relations: Jaishankars Visit Boosts Development Cooperation

New Delhi, May 10: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s recent visit to Trinidad and Tobago has revitalized multi-faceted cooperation between the two nations. This trip not only strengthens development collaboration but also deepens the historical and cultural ties between India and the Caribbean region.

Ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal shared on social media platform ‘X’, “History is intertwined with mutual relationships and shared aspirations. The significant outcomes of Minister Jaishankar’s visit to Trinidad and Tobago are evident, particularly in the fields of education, tourism, health, Ayurveda, and energy. This trip has further solidified the robust and forward-looking partnership between India and Trinidad and Tobago.”

During the visit, a permanent facility for prosthetics, known as the ‘National Prosthetic Center,’ was inaugurated in Penal, South Trinidad. Additionally, the agricultural processing plant of the National Agricultural Marketing and Development Corporation was handed over in Couva, Central Trinidad.

Furthermore, the first set of ‘Made in India’ laptops, part of the 2,000 laptops announced during Prime Minister Modi’s visit last year, was distributed to school children. MOUs were signed to implement proposals for a solar PV project. In tourism, agreements were made regarding the revival of the Ayurveda chair at the University of the West Indies and the historical India-Cultural enhancement experience at Nelson Island.

Four MOUs were also signed for the procurement of thermal foggers to promote health and sanitation across North, South, East, and West Trinidad.

Earlier, the Minister addressed a gathering on historic Nelson Island, expressing his happiness in launching a Quick Impact Project for upgrading the cultural heritage with India’s assistance.

He noted that this project includes a memorial monument, the creation of a digital hub for historical data from the National Archives, and a digital audio-visual experience setup. This initiative will greatly benefit visitors to this beautiful country.

Jaishankar emphasized the importance of creating a database for the Girmitiya community in India and conducting research on this heritage. Under Prime Minister Modi’s guidance, efforts are underway to establish a dedicated Girmitiya Studies Center. He expressed satisfaction over the signing of an MOU for cooperation between India’s National Archives and Trinidad and Tobago, hoping it will help many discover their ancestral roots and reconnect with their families in India.
