Kathmandu, 18 August (Kiran News): In a bid to enhance air connectivity between Nepal and India, the Nepal government has once again formally requested additional air routes from India.

During a meeting with Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri, who is currently on a visit to Nepal, Nepal’s Foreign Minister Dr. Arzu Rana pressed for improved air connectivity linking various cities of both countries. She specifically requested that India grant Nepal more air routes to facilitate direct flights.

At present, air connectivity exists between five cities—Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Varanasi, and Kolkata—with Kathmandu. Dr. Rana conveyed Nepal’s official request to expand this connectivity to more Indian cities.

She further proposed establishing direct flights between Nepal and cities such as Patna, Lucknow, Dehradun, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, and Hyderabad in South India. Additionally, Dr. Rana urged for consideration of direct air links not only to Kathmandu but also to Pokhara and Bhairahawa international airports in Nepal. She expressed hope that a decision on this issue could be reached during Prime Minister KP Oli’s proposed visit to India.

In the meeting with the Indian Foreign Secretary, Dr. Rana also asked for two new air routes for international flights coming into Nepal from India. She explained that Nepal has been requesting the Indian government for many years to provide the Gorakhpur-Sunauli and Lucknow-Nepalgunj air routes.

Currently, all flights from India to Nepal use only one route: Patna-Motihari-Raxaul-Simara, landing at Kathmandu. This single route has led to congestion at Kathmandu airport, forcing several flights to hold in the air for hours each day.
