New Delhi, May 27: The Supreme Court upheld the Election Commission’s decision regarding the Special Intensive Review (SIR) of voter lists on Wednesday. The court stated that the SIR falls within the constitutional and legal powers of the election body and aims to maintain the integrity of the electoral process. Leaders from the BJP and NDA expressed their satisfaction with this ruling.
BJP leader Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi commented, “The SIR is not a new initiative introduced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is an ongoing process. It is 100% safe for honest and loyal citizens. Unfortunately, some individuals create confusion on every issue. The court has repeatedly warned such people and taught them lessons.”
Minister Om Prakash Rajbhar stated, “We welcome the Supreme Court’s decision. The Election Commission is independent, and the Supreme Court has endorsed this. The commission has the authority and power to conduct SIR in any state. The opposition is merely crying out, and nothing more. Their weakness lies in their involvement in fraudulent voting, even casting votes in the names of deceased individuals. Now, the Election Commission has put a stop to this. The Supreme Court has rightly supported that the SIR is valid, and the allegations are baseless.”
Danish Azad Ansari, a minister in the Uttar Pradesh government, also welcomed the Supreme Court’s ruling on SIR petitions and dismissed the opposition’s claims regarding vote bank politics. He said, “Through the SIR, the Election Commission is strengthening the democratic framework of the country by ensuring fair and transparent elections. If elections are conducted transparently and fairly, the beauty of our Constitution will shine even brighter. The aim of this process is to revise and update the voter list, which includes removing duplicate entries, names of transferred or deceased voters, and correcting errors. The entire SIR process is a corrective effort to ensure fair elections and strengthen the Constitution. Unfortunately, the opposition has tried to create confusion on this issue for political gain.”
Bihar government minister Deepak Prakash remarked, “Amending the voter list is not an issue. It is a regular process. Whenever the Election Commission deems it necessary to amend the voter list, it conducts the SIR process. It has done so in the past and will continue to do so. This is entirely routine work. The opposition is unnecessarily trying to make it an electoral issue. They have repeatedly attempted to turn this into an electoral issue in Bihar as well, but the results are evident. Therefore, this is completely a regular process, and their attempt to create unnecessary issues has failed.”
Maulana Yasub Abbas, General Secretary of the All India Shia Personal Law Board, stated that they respect the Supreme Court’s decision on SIR and everyone should welcome it.
