NCR Air Quality Improves, Moves Out of Red Zone After Months

New Delhi, February 2

After several months of severe and very severe air pollution, the National Capital Region (NCR) has finally seen some relief as air quality moves out of the ‘Red’ zone. The latest Air Quality Index (AQI) data shows that most areas in Delhi-NCR now fall under the Yellow (moderate) and Orange (unhealthy) categories.

However, on Monday morning, many parts of NCR experienced fog and haze. According to the India Meteorological Department, moderate fog is expected to persist from February 2 to February 7. During this period, maximum temperatures will range between 18 to 21 degrees Celsius, while minimum temperatures will be between 8 to 11 degrees Celsius. Humidity levels are expected to be high, ranging from 90 to 98 percent, which may reduce visibility in the early hours.

Delhi’s AQI readings indicate that several monitoring stations recorded values in the Orange and Yellow categories. For instance, Anand Vihar registered an AQI of 242, Ashok Vihar 222, Chandni Chowk 217, Bawana 222, Aya Nagar 121, Mathura Road 151, DTU 158, and Burari Crossing 157.

Noida also showed improvement, although some sectors remain in the Orange zone. Sector 125 recorded an AQI of 235, Sector 1 at 208, Sector 116 at 207, and Sector 62 at 138. In Ghaziabad, the situation remains comparatively severe with some areas still showing high AQI levels: Loni at 271, Indirapuram 255, Vasundhara 237, and Sanjay Nagar 211.

Experts attribute this improvement partly to reduced vehicular movement on Sunday, a holiday, and the closure of many industrial units, leading to a decrease in pollution-generating activities. These factors have helped bring AQI below hazardous levels. However, the meteorological department warns that due to fog and haze, pollutants may remain trapped in the atmosphere, necessitating continued monitoring of air quality in the coming days.

For now, NCR residents are breathing somewhat cleaner air after a long period, though experts advise continued caution.
