Navigating Travel Challenges Amidst Extreme Heat: Essential Tips

New Delhi, May 24: The country is currently grappling with severe heat waves, with several states under orange and red alerts. From May 25 to June 2, the phenomenon known as “Nautapa” is expected, which may further intensify the heat. Consequently, it has become crucial for travelers to exercise caution.

The National Health Mission (NHM) of the Indian government has released essential guidelines to ensure safe and comfortable travel during the summer months. With a bit of preparation and the right precautions, summer travel can be made much easier.

Preparation Before Travel: Ensure you get a good night’s sleep and adequate rest before embarking on your journey. Wear light, cotton, and loose-fitting clothing to allow air circulation and minimize discomfort from the heat. Carry an umbrella, hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen with SPF to protect yourself from the sun.

During Travel Precautions: Never travel on an empty stomach. Have a light snack before leaving home. Always carry a water bottle and take small sips regularly to stay hydrated. Keep ORS, lemonade, coconut water, or glucose powder handy to prevent dehydration. Opt for light, fresh, and easily digestible meals, avoiding heavy, fried, or outside food. Pay special attention to children and the elderly, ensuring they drink water frequently.

Additional Important Precautions: If possible, avoid traveling between 12 PM and 3 PM when the sun is at its peak. Do not set the vehicle’s air conditioning too low. If you need to stop, choose a shaded and cool area. Rest immediately if you feel fatigued. Health experts emphasize that maintaining a balance of water and electrolytes is vital to prevent dehydration and heat stroke.
