Windhoek, August 28: Namibia stunned South Africa by 18 runs in the opening match of the T20 tri-series featuring Namibia, South Africa, and Zimbabwe. The match took place at the Namibia Cricket Ground, where the hosts set a challenging target of 164 runs. South Africa managed to score only 145 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in their 20 overs, falling short by 18 runs.
Dewald Brevis was the standout performer for South Africa, scoring 75 runs. Coming in at number three, Brevis faced 50 balls, hitting 4 fours and 5 sixes. However, his dismissal as the sixth wicket proved pivotal, as South Africa needed 31 runs from the last 12 balls but could not capitalize.
For Namibia, captain Ruben Trumpelmann and JJ Smit each took 3 wickets, while captain Erasmus, Jack Brassel, and Max Hingo claimed 1 wicket apiece.
Batting first after losing the toss, Namibia posted a total of 163 runs for 9 wickets. Openers Jan Frylinck and Lauraine Steenkamp laid a solid foundation with an 84-run partnership for the first wicket in just 9.4 overs. Frylinck scored 60 runs off 38 balls, including 2 sixes and 6 fours, while Steenkamp contributed 41 runs from 29 balls.
For South Africa, Duyane Janse van Rensburg took 2 wickets for 32 runs in 4 overs, and P. Subrayen claimed 3 wickets for the same number of runs. Captain Bjorn Fortuin, Nakobani Mokoeana, and Dewald Brevis also took 1 wicket each.
Duyane Janse van Rensburg is the younger brother of South African all-rounder Marco Jansen and made his international debut in this match.
