Gandhinagar, April 14: National Security Advisor (NSA) Ajit Doval emphasized on Tuesday that national security fundamentally relies on the morale of the nation and the awareness of its citizens. He stated that it should not be defined solely by military strength or technological capabilities but understood as a collective national responsibility.
Speaking at the fifth convocation ceremony of the National Defence University (RRU) in Gujarat, after receiving an honorary doctorate from President Droupadi Murmu, he highlighted the need for those working in security to combine strong character, updated knowledge systems, and a results-oriented approach to effectively respond to evolving threats.
Doval remarked, “National security is not just the responsibility of the army or police, but a collective responsibility of the entire nation.” He further noted that public awareness and national morale play a decisive role in shaping outcomes in this field.
He stressed that security professionals must remain prepared to tackle rapidly changing threats, particularly those arising from technological advancements. Adaptability and continuous learning are essential to address modern challenges.
Highlighting the seriousness of the field, he stated that security is an area where outcomes are absolute. “There is no concept of a silver medal in security; it’s either victory or defeat. If you win, the nation remains safe; if you lose, existence itself is at risk.” He urged graduating students to be fully dedicated to serving the nation with discipline, preparation, and commitment.
Doval reiterated that security extends beyond armed forces or police institutions, encompassing various dimensions of national life where coordination, awareness, and moral responsibility are crucial for effective outcomes.
He also mentioned that RRU demonstrates a long-term institutional approach to strengthening India’s security framework through structured education and training in policing, strategic studies, and related fields.
During the ceremony, Doval was honored with the honorary doctorate for his contributions to national security.
Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel stated that RRU has emerged as a significant institution in enhancing India’s capabilities in national security, policing, and technology. He noted that it reflects a national vision to develop a skilled workforce capable of addressing modern security challenges.
He added, “The National Defence University is making a vital contribution to India’s security framework by training professionals equipped with essential modern knowledge, technical understanding, and specialized skills.” He also emphasized the increasing participation of women in security and technology fields, highlighting the growing opportunities and reinforcing the dream of a developed and inclusive India.
Governor Acharya Devvrat urged the youth to dedicate themselves to national service with a deep sense of discipline, dedication, and responsibility. He stated, “The youth must engage in the mission of national security with a spirit of patriotism and commitment to the nation.”
He further remarked, “With dedication, sacrifice, and a spirit of selflessness, young professionals should contribute to the nation’s development and fulfill their duties with integrity and discipline.” He stressed that the true strength of the country ultimately depends on the character, discipline, and sense of duty of the youth entering crucial sectors like security, governance, and public service.
The governor also referenced the abrogation of Article 370, calling it a historic decision that demonstrated strong political will and enhanced internal security and national unity. He noted that this decision played a crucial role in improving the security environment in the region and ensuring better governance and stability, aligning with the larger goals of national security.
He concluded by encouraging students to draw inspiration from such events and remain dedicated to truth, discipline, and national duty while contributing to the nation’s security framework.
