Adelaide, 18 December: Off-spinner Nathan Lyon, who was left out of the playing XI in the first two Ashes Tests at Perth and Brisbane, was included in the Adelaide Test by captain Pat Cummins. Seizing the opportunity, Lyon broke the record for the most Test wickets taken by an Australian, previously held by fast bowler Glenn McGrath. McGrath’s reaction after his record was broken has become a talking point on social media.
Nathan Lyon needed just two wickets to surpass Glenn McGrath’s Test tally. On the second day of the Adelaide Test, Lyon claimed the wickets of Ollie Pope and Ben Duckett to break the record.
Glenn McGrath was present in the commentary box during the match. Seeing his record broken, he showed a playful side by lifting a nearby chair above his head in mock anger. Although it was in jest, this reaction quickly caught the attention of cricket fans online. Cricket Australia shared a humorous video of McGrath lifting the chair on their social media platforms.
Nathan Lyon has now become Australia’s second most successful Test bowler. Playing his 141st Test, Lyon has taken 564 wickets so far. He has also achieved the remarkable feat of taking five wickets in an innings 24 times during his career.
Glenn McGrath has moved to third place. The right-arm fast bowler took 563 wickets in 124 Tests between 1993 and 2007. His best performance in an innings is eight wickets for 24 runs, and he claimed five wickets in an innings 29 times.
The highest wicket-taker for Australia in Tests remains Shane Warne, who took 708 wickets in 145 Tests from 1992 to 2007.
Regarding the Adelaide Test, Australia scored 371 runs in their first innings. By the close of play on the second day, Australia had lost 8 wickets for 213 runs in their second innings.
