NASA Astronaut Anil Menon Arrives at ISS for Historic Eight-Month Mission

Washington, July 15: Indian-American NASA astronaut Anil Menon has successfully arrived at the International Space Station (ISS) for his first eight-month mission. He traveled aboard the Soyuz MS-29 spacecraft, which launched from Kazakhstan’s Baikonur Cosmodrome. After a journey of approximately three hours and two orbits, the spacecraft docked with the ISS at 1:52 PM EDT. Alongside Menon, Russian cosmonauts Pyotr Dubrov and Anna Kikina also joined the orbital laboratory.

The trio departed from Baikonur at 10:47 AM EDT, which was 7:47 PM local time. With their arrival, the crew count at the ISS has increased to ten for the next two weeks.

Before the launch, Menon expressed his pride on social media platform X, stating, “I am honored to serve in the United States Space Force and fly to the International Space Station today with the support of NASA and our international partners!”

In another post, he shared his excitement about launching from Kazakhstan on Soyuz MS-29 and starting his eight-month mission in support of NASA and Expedition 74/75. He expressed gratitude to the NASA community, friends, family, and loved ones, and looked forward to the journey ahead.

NASA astronauts Jessica Meir, Jack Hathaway, and Chris Williams, along with European Space Agency astronaut Sophie Adenot and Roscosmos cosmonauts Sergey Kud-Sverchkov, Sergey Mikayev, and Andrey Fedyaev, welcomed the new arrivals.

According to NASA, Menon, Dubrov, and Kikina will remain in the orbital laboratory until April 2027. This marks Menon’s first journey into space, while it is the second mission for both Dubrov and Kikina.

During the mission, Menon will conduct various experiments related to scientific research and technology demonstrations aimed at advancing human space exploration and benefiting life on Earth. He will focus on improving the production of semiconductor crystals in space, which are essential for high-performance computers, artificial intelligence systems, and advanced medical devices.

Menon will also utilize augmented reality and artificial intelligence techniques for ultrasound procedures, potentially eliminating the need for Earth-based medical support in future space missions. NASA noted that Menon will participate as a test subject in studies examining how blood flow changes in space. Additionally, he will test bioprinting vascular constructs in microgravity to better understand the aging process and develop new treatment methods.

After completing his eight-month science mission at the orbital outpost, Expedition 75 will commence on July 26, following the departure of Williams, Kud-Sverchkov, and Mikayev. A handover ceremony will take place on July 25, transferring command of the station from Kud-Sverchkov to Jessica Meir.

The ISS has maintained a continuous human presence for over 25 years. Due to microgravity, it serves as a unique laboratory for scientific research, enabling experiments that are difficult or impossible to conduct on Earth. Research conducted here contributes to advancements in fields such as medicine, engineering, biology, and materials science, while also aiding preparations for future human missions to the Moon and Mars.
