New Delhi, August 12: N. Chandrasekaran, who has completed four decades with the Tata Group, described his tenure as the head of Tata Sons as both a significant honor and a profound responsibility. He has decided not to seek reappointment after his current term ends on February 20, 2027. This announcement comes ahead of the annual general meeting (AGM) scheduled for August 18.
Reflecting on his 40-year journey with the Tata Group, Chandrasekaran expressed pride in being part of such a prestigious institution and contributing to its growth. He stated that leading Tata Sons for the past decade has been one of the greatest responsibilities and achievements of his life.
In his statement, he remarked, “I have completed 40 years in my professional life with the Tata Group. Contributing to the development of this esteemed institution has been immensely satisfying. Leading Tata Sons for the last decade has been a significant honor and a deep responsibility.”
He noted that his current term concludes on February 20, 2027. “The Sir Dorabji Tata Trust and Sir Ratan Tata Trust had unanimously proposed to extend my term for another five years. This recommendation was also supported by Tata Sons’ Nomination and Remuneration Committee and the board. Subsequently, this proposal was presented to the Tata Sons board on February 24, 2026.”
Chandrasekaran added, “However, this proposal did not progress as one board member did not support it. Due to the lack of unanimous support, I chose to defer the decision.”
He mentioned that it has been six months since that board meeting, yet no final decision has been reached. “Tata Sons is a vast institution, and many strategic projects are currently in critical phases. Clarity on the new leader to guide the group after February 2027 is essential. This is crucial not only for the organization but also for employees, investors, partners, and other stakeholders.”
Regarding his resignation decision, he stated, “Under these circumstances, I have informed the Tata Sons board today that I will not present my name for reappointment after my term ends on February 20, 2027. I have requested the board to make a decision on succession as soon as possible to ensure a smooth leadership transition.”
In closing, he expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, saying, “I am thankful for the support of all stakeholders. Sincerely, Chandra.”
It is noteworthy that N. Chandrasekaran joined the Tata Group in 1987. In 2009, he became the CEO of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), where he led the company to new global heights. He was appointed chairman of Tata Sons in 2017.
Over the past year, the Tata Group has faced several challenges, including regulatory issues related to Air India, pricing pressures on TCS, and a cyberattack on Jaguar Land Rover. Additionally, differences between Tata Sons and Tata Trusts have previously surfaced, notably during the ousting of former chairman Cyrus Mistry in 2016.
Chandrasekaran’s decision has sparked discussions about the future leadership of the Tata Group. Investors, employees, and the industry are keenly watching to see who will be the next chairman of Tata Sons and the direction in which the group will head.
