New Delhi, September 7 (Daily Kiran) : The Indian auto retail sector has achieved unprecedented sales in August, according to the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations (FADA). A total of 2,423,201 vehicles were sold, reflecting a 17.51% increase compared to the same month last year. All categories, including two-wheelers, passenger vehicles, commercial vehicles, tractors, and three-wheelers, set new sales records during this period.
Leading the way was wheeled construction equipment, which saw a remarkable 31.45% increase in sales. Two-wheelers followed with a 19.69% rise, while passenger vehicles and commercial vehicles increased by 16.14% and 14.45%, respectively. Three-wheeler sales rose by 8.64%, and tractor sales saw a modest increase of 0.84%.
FADA President Sai Giridhar noted that retail sales in August were 6.48% lower than the record set in July. This decline was attributed to the typical seasonal slowdown during the monsoon and changes in the festival calendar. As a result, some purchases linked to Ganesh Chaturthi and Onam shifted to September.
In August, two-wheeler retail sales reached 1,714,610 units, marking a 19.69% year-over-year increase. This figure represents the highest two-wheeler sales for the month ever recorded.
Passenger vehicle sales totaled 402,398 units, up 16.14% from August of the previous year. This was also the first time passenger vehicle sales surpassed the 400,000 unit mark in August. However, on a monthly basis, sales dipped by 3.40%.
Commercial vehicle sales reached 90,769 units, reflecting a 14.45% increase year-over-year and setting a new record for August. Nonetheless, sales fell by 8.93% compared to the previous month due to seasonal sluggishness in freight transport.
Additionally, three-wheeler sales hit 122,281 units, an 8.64% increase compared to last year, marking the highest sales for this category in August. Electric vehicles (EVs) constituted 65.30% of these sales.
Looking ahead, FADA reports a positive outlook among auto dealers for September, albeit with some softening compared to July’s peak levels. Dealers are optimistic about the upcoming festive season, which includes ongoing purchases related to Ganesh Chaturthi, Onam, and the start of Navratri. Approximately 43.59% of dealers indicated that bookings for the festive season have already begun.
However, concerns remain about the impact of reduced monsoon rains on demand from rural areas. Additionally, the recent price hikes implemented by vehicle manufacturers as of September 1 pose a challenge for dealers.
